
Getting the Most Out of Our 120W/cm Mercury UV Lamps
We built our Standard mercury UV lamps to hit a sweet spot: 120W per centimeter. If you’re running a small or mid-sized shop, you know the struggle. You need your inks to cure fast, but you don’t have the massive power grid of a giant industrial plant. This wattage gives you that speed without blowing a fuse or requiring a total electrical overhaul. The science part (made simple) Here’s how it actually works. That 120W/cm rating is just a way of saying the power is spread evenly across the quartz tube. The mercury vapor inside kicks out a broad range of UV light—mostly UVC and UVB. When that light hits your ink, it triggers a reaction that turns liquid to solid almost instantly. You get a hard, bone-dry finish in a matter of seconds. But a word of caution: if you’re running these at full blast, keep an eye on your conveyor speed. If the paper or plastic moves too slowly, you’ll end up scorching your material. It happens faster than you’d think. What’s under the hood We use high-purity fused quartz for the tubes. Regular glass just won’t cut it—it would block the UV rays and likely melt under the heat. We also spent a lot of time on the electrode placement. Why? Because nobody likes “dark ends.” We wanted to make sure the light is just as strong at the edges of the lamp as it is in the middle. Making it work in your shop The best part is that these are basically drop-in replacements. They fit into most standard UV curing tunnels, so you can upgrade your gear without tearing your whole system apart. One thing to keep in mind, though: these lamps gethot. Really hot. Along with the UV light, you’re dealing with a lot of infrared heat. If your cooling fans are dusty or your airflow is blocked, the lamp will overheat and burn out way too soon. Just make sure your cooling system can handle the heat, and your lamps will last as long as they’re supposed to.
